Penang Trip Nov 2009

Day 1

From KL to Penang via coach...took 5 hours on the road!

Approaching Penang Island

On the Penang Bridge...

Munching Boiled Groundnuts along the way...they were huge nuts!

The Coach dropped us at this huge mall known as QueensBay Shopping Mall...
where we spent about nearly 2hrs hunting for those vincci shoes hehe...

Ladened with our trophies of shoes, tired but happy, we took a cab down to our hotel :)

The room and beds looked not too bad... very spacious...

View out from our hotel room...nice sea view...and the eastern oriental right across!

Went to this Red Cafe hawker place for dinner...where we were trapped by a heavy thnderstorm for a while...

We had Bak kut teh and yam tau foo with coconut drinks

Day 2

view out from hotel at the lift lobby, can still see the Penang Bridge in the distance...

That is the Komtar tower...used to be the tallest in asia with its 60 over stories...

At the Padang...

Looking for a place for breakfast...

This is a wet market!

Found the makan place! Hurray!

Ordered some food to share...'fried'noodles and eggs with 'wantan' & beehoon with trotters

Stopped to take photos of a mosque, a very pretty mosque

and nearby, there was a temple too...

Found the Khoo Kongsi after many rounds of driving in the city...

This is a UNESCO protected heritage site!
HAve a peek!

Wow, spent about 2 hrs there! guided by a kind Mr Khoo who works as one of the trustee for the place...He gave us quite a rich commentary of the place and pointed out the various interesting icons for us to take photographs...such a nice old gentleman. He even invited us over again hehe...

Going over to the next UNESCO Heritage site...known as
The BLUE MANSION or CHEONG FATT TSE MANSION

The place was not opened until 3pm so we had to come back later...PHOTOs BY SH below captured more essence of the place after a very interesting round of guided tour by the lady guide who gave a very interesting account of the history of the place, from the family stories to architecture to fengshui... We all enjoyed ourselves to the extent that i wanted to stay there for the night. yes, it works as a kind of hotel which offers rooms from RM$360 to RM$800 per night!

The blue paint on the walls were a type of indigo paint from plant

Coin symbols repeated thru'out the house and surroundings, symbolizing wealth

and lotus plants...

These five shophouses across were once part of the Blue Mansion as well, but were now sold out to the outsiders, while the mansion itself were bought over by a group of people who were keen to conserve and protect the rich history/culture/architecture of the building.

ok, now driving around to look for the next cultural rich site...

any clue where we were heading?

Yes, The place where 'The Little Nyonya' series were shot...
it is also a protected and conserved site with guided tours...

The famous staircase featured many times in the series....

The ancestors temple for worshipping

This pillar of wood was carved and imported from China

Tired and hungry after the tours...we went for Nasi Padang...as introduced to us by L

The Roti Prata man...

At night we went to Gurney Drive to makan...after some shopping at the Gurney Mall...another huge mall in Penang :)

Had Penang Char Kua tiao and Assam LAksa

Day 3

SH and I decided to have a good breakfast at the Eastern Oriental Hotel opposite our hotel before going for airport...

It is a mini Raffles Hotel version...the look and feel of the place...was told that it was run by the same company that owns Raffles Hotel in Spore.

Anyway, yes, breakfast, we decided to have ours by the sea

and we ordered each a continental set...very much carbo diet...lots of bread and danish...but i loved the fruits....

Bye bye Penang...this shot was SH's best efforts to capture it before the taxi sped past it on our way to the aiport...

The End
